“So, seven years ago, we moved back into the area and started up a general public gym.” “A big reason we wanted to move to Ithaca was to start up Ultimate Athletics,” said Ciotoli. It didn’t take long for the business to grow and he had Ithaca on his mind, which made him move his venture back in town. “I started recruiting fighters, mostly wrestlers, and we’d train these guys and they turned out to be good, even though it was in a new sport.” “We bought a house out there and in the back, we had a pole barn, so we converted that into a gym,” said Ciotoli. Before he would return to Ithaca, he went to Cortland and started to build a base of some top-notch competitors. After six years on the IC wrestling coaching staff, Ciotoli went into business for himself. That need for a spot in Upstate New York where fighters could go to is what drove his next step. People would laugh at that now, but I just didn’t have a dedicated gym to go to.” “Most of the time, I would show up to a fight without a corner. “I just did it for fun,” said Ciotoli on his fighting career. The club, which was called the “Bomb Squad,” started up at IC and started Ciotoli’s career as a competitor in the combat sport scene. It was a brand-new sport and I still wanted to compete in something, so I started up a club.” “I started competing and back then it was a lot different. “Right around when I started to get into coaching, I got into mixed martial arts,” said Ciotoli. Ciotoli wore multiple hats while he was on the Bombers’ staff, as his passion started to grow off the wrestling mat as well. I still wanted to teach, but I wanted it to be something I was passionate for, so I got into sports management.”Īfter he graduated in 2002 from IC, he joined head coach Marty Nichols’ staff as an assistant wrestling coach to start pursuing that love of coaching. “I was in health and Phys Ed and I think about halfway through, I knew that I didn’t want to teach in a public setting. “I think when you go to school at 18, you really don’t know what you want to do,” said Ciotoli. He studied physical education and health education, but it didn’t take him too long to carve out his own path to pursue. The gym is open to the public and also trains competitors, but the evolution of where it is today has a decade-long backstory.Ĭiotoli, who is a three-time All-American wrestler from his days grappling at Ithaca College, used his South Hill connections to springboard his career.
